Description

STANDARD REFERENCE TO CALIFORNIA'S PLACE NAMES THIS BOOK HAS AN INTERESTING PUBLISHING HISTORY. It first appeared in three volumes that covered different geographical areas - and a revised edition in a single volume was issued in 1948. Because California is a vibrant state, constantly expanding and renewing, more revisions were necessary and this version - the Third Edition - came out with new maps and photographs in 1966. The copy you are looking at now was printed in 1970. Intended originally to be carried around the state by a traveler or tourist, it is considered a standard work to be consulted when the story behind a particular place is wanted. The authors - Mildred Brooke Hoover, Hero, Eugene Rensch and Ethel Grace Rensch - aimed to stimulate an interest in California's rich history , and also call attention to preserving the state's heritage . They created a treasure trove of fascinating history that is also likely to stimulate a desire to travel. THIS HARDCOVER COPY IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION with clean, crisp and unmarked pages. There are none of the underlines and highlighting often found in used reference books. The binding is firm and square and there are no signs of previous ownership. It had a dust-jacket originally but it was discarded somewhere along the road. More than 100 black-and white photographs illustrated the text along with maps. The text is organized into counties along alphabetical lines - From Alameda County to Yuba County Publisher: Stanford University Press ISBN: 8047-0079-6 Non-Fiction: History + All books sold by Mackie Books are packaged in bubble wrap to guard against damage during shipping.
